Why the name of the Chair
St. John Paul II was the person who did the most to bring down communism, his centennial is celebrated in 2020, and he had proclaimed himself spokesman for the Church of Silence, for those who suffered on the other side of the Wall. His last book, Memory and Identity,tells us about his life experience and condemns the two totalitarian systems he endured during his life, Nazism and Communism, warning of the arrival of new totalitarianisms.
Origin of the Chair
The CEU Chair for History, Memory and Identity has the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism among its references, which was signed on 3 June 2008. This was a declaration initiated by the Czech government and signed by leading European politicians, former political prisoners and historians, calling for “the Europe-wide condemnation of, and education about, the crimes of communism”. Based on the European Parliament resolution of 19 September 2019 on the importance of European Remembrance for the future of Europeon 23 September, the European Parliament made 23 September the Remembrance day for the victims of communism and Nazism.
The CEU Institute of Historical Studies of the CEU San Pablo University is the promoter of the CEU Chair for History, Memory and Identity.

Objectives
- To make society aware of the crimes committed by totalitarian ideologies, their causes and consequences, with the aim of defending a person’s dignity.
- To support education in freedom and coexistence, the founding principles of the CEU in 1933, to prevent totalitarian ideologies through seminars, training courses, research projects and complementary training programmes.
- To consolidate an educational project that integrates students in their belonging to the Spanish community, which has always been based on Christian principles that created a free society and that contributes the experience of its rich culture and history to the legacy of Europe.
- To prevent intolerance and discrimination through the dissemination of the values of our culture, which provide the “antibodies” against the development of totalitarian ideologies in young generations.
- To promote internationalisation with other European and American institutions that help prevent totalitarian danger, facilitate knowledge of other countries and, consequently, favour the integration and respect of our fellow citizens in a free and plural society.
- To support exchange “and experience” with other institutions with similar objectives to those of this chair.
- To act as a bridge, Spain’s historic mission, between Europe and America.
